Fall Thoughts
Every week, someone tells me, “Alex, I hate my headshot, but it’s the one I’ve got.” If that sounds like you, you’re in good company. After a lifetime behind the camera, I can tell you most people look better than they think. They just need good light, a little direction, and a photographer who makes the room feel easy.
Fall is a great time to do this. The leaves are turning around Middleborough, the busy season is starting, and people are updating websites, LinkedIn profiles, and holiday cards. Think about how people find you now. A new client in Plymouth, Taunton, or Wareham looks you up before they ever pick up the phone. Your photo is the first handshake, and it says, “A real person is here and ready to help.”
A good headshot isn’t stiff. It shows you on a great day, relaxed and confident. In a session, I’ll guide your chin, shoulders, and expression, and we’ll usually have a laugh along the way. That’s often when the best frame shows up. You don’t need to know how to pose. That’s my job.
Quick checklist: is your headshot due for a refresh?
Give yourself one point for each one that fits.
- It’s more than three years old, or your look has changed since.
- Friends say, “That doesn’t really look like you.”
- It was cropped from a group photo or a vacation snapshot.
- You use a different photo on every platform.
- You’d feel a little nervous if a new client compared it to you in person.
Two points or more? It’s time. One point? Keep an eye on it. Zero points? Lucky you, and please send me your secret.
Alex’s tip: Once you have a new headshot, use the same one everywhere: your website, LinkedIn, email signature, and chamber directory. People start to recognize you, and recognition builds trust. Bring two outfit options to your session, in solid colors, and I’ll help you pick.
